This family-friendly event on Earth Day provides a relaxing opportunity to learn about dark sky conservation, see meteors, and much more.

This family-friendly event on Earth Day provides a relaxing opportunity to learn about the importance of dark sky conservation, having a chance to see a meteor, enjoy a near-full moon and more. For $25.00 a car, stay the entire night at the park and enjoy the following activities:

  • 8:30: Saving the Dark
    Explore the need to preserve dark skies and learn how to combat light pollution with this one-hour film, provided by the American Conservation Film Festival.
  • 9:30: Light Pollution’s Effects on Wildlife
    Join Virginia Master Naturalists for a talk on how light pollution impacts our native plants and animals. Begins with a kid-friendly segment exploring the animals of Sky Meadows.
  • 10:30: Lyrid Meteor Shower
    Listen as an astronomer describes the Lyrid phenomenon and how best to capture the meteors on film.
  • 11:00: Imaging the Night
    Learn tips and tricks from an astronomer on capturing celestial objects such as the Milky Way, moon, the planets and deep space objects on your device.
  • Throughout the night, play light-up field games and watch as radio signals are bounced off meteors with a Ham radio group. All this and more made possible by the Friends of Sky Meadows.
  • The Friends Group of Sky Meadows will have on sale hotdogs, chips, cold and hot drinks (CASH ONLY)

Note:

We ask that you only bring in blankets, lawn chairs and sleeping bags, No Tents and or coolers. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ALLOWED ON PREMISES.

Pets are allowed but they must be kept on a leash at all times.
